Madonna Hospital is a new, 100-bed hospital with three specialty services: ophthalmology, orthopedics and surgery. Madonna Hospital serves mainly rural communities with a total population of approximately 1 million people. The hospital staff provides care for about 430 patients per month or over 5,000 patients per year.
WADSO has been working with Bishop Ugorji since 2005 to complete the construction of Madonna Hospital and to equip the hospital. WADSO has partnered with other non-profit organizations including H.E.L.P. International, Project C.U.R.E., Rotary Club and St. John African Mission to send three shipping containers filled with needed medical and surgical equipment to Madonna Hospital.
In 2019, two additional containers of equipment donated by Project C.U.R.E. were shipped to Nigeria. One container went to Madonna Hospital and the other container went to ”sister hospitals” St. Michael’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital. These two hospitals are in outlying areas and patients with more serious health needs can be transported to Madonna Hospital for continuing care.
